Demi Lovato has officially returned to Camp Rock. The 33-year-old star singer reprises the role of Mitchie Torres in "Camp Rock 3," bringing one of Disney Channel's most recognizable characters back nearly two decades after the original movie. The comeback remained a closely guarded secret for months. Disney had confirmed Lovato as an executive producer, but the studio stopped short of revealing an on-screen appearance. "Camp Rock 3" premiered on Disney Channel on August 13, 2026, followed by its Disney+ release on August 14. The third movie arrives about 18 years after "Camp Rock" introduced viewers to Mitchie, Shane Gray, and a summer camp packed with young musicians. Lovato does not return as the movie's main star. Instead, the "Cool for the Summer" hitmaker makes a carefully placed appearance that connects the original story with the franchise's younger cast.

The Jonas Brothers were also confirmed to return as Shane, Nate, and Jason, but Mitchie Torres was noticeably missing from the initial cast announcement.
That omission immediately raised questions among longtime fans. Mitchie served as the heart of the first two movies, so making another "Camp Rock" without acknowledging the aspiring singer would have left a major gap in the story.
Director Veronica Rodriguez carefully avoided confirming the comeback during early interviews. Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly that Mitchie remained an important part of the franchise's history, while promising familiar faces and references to the earlier films.
The director later revealed that the creative team always intended to include Mitchie. The real decision involved how much screen time the character should receive, since "Camp Rock 3" needed room for its new generation to lead the story. Lovato also had to keep the cameo quiet during interviews and public appearances. At the Los Angeles premiere in August, the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer admitted that hiding the secret had been difficult because fans kept asking about a possible Mitchie return.
Mitchie and Shane Reunite in "Camp Rock 3"
The new movie takes place around 15 years after the events of "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam." Connect 3 has become a successful group, and the band needs an opening act for an upcoming reunion tour.
That search leads Shane, Nate, and Jason back toward Camp Rock. Joe Jonas returns as Shane Gray, while Nick Jonas reprises Nate Gray and Kevin Jonas steps back into the role of Jason Gray.
Maria Canals-Barrera also returns as Connie Torres, Mitchie's mother. The returning cast gives "Camp Rock 3" a direct connection to the earlier movies without turning the new film into a complete retelling of the original story.
Still, Disney gives longtime fans a meaningful Mitchie and Shane moment. Shane asks Mitchie, "Same time, next summer?" The brief exchange leaves their connection open while giving the characters a warm moment after years away from the screen.
Lovato explained that the scene carries a hopeful message. The moment suggests that the happiness tied to Camp Rock can continue, even as new characters take over the music, friendships, and competition. Joe Jonas also described filming with Lovato again as a surreal experience.
"Camp Rock 3" Hands the Microphone to New Stars

The new cast also includes Lumi Pollack as Rosie, Casey Trotter as Cliff, Brooklynn Pitts as Callie, and Ava Jean as Madison. Sherry Cola joins the movie as Lark, the tour manager working with Connect 3.
Sage has some clear similarities to Mitchie Torres. Both characters arrive at Camp Rock with musical ambition, strong songwriting instincts, and something to prove in front of talented young performers.
The original "Camp Rock" premiered in 2008 and became a major Disney Channel hit. Lovato's performance of "This Is Me" with Joe Jonas became one of the movie's defining musical moments and helped establish the young singer with a huge audience. Lovato returned for "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" in 2010. The sequel produced another fan favorite with "Wouldn't Change a Thing," once again pairing Lovato's vocals with Joe Jonas.
