Merle Travis is known to mix country music with western style, and his song’s lyrics usually depicted the woes of coal miners. Because of his unique style, while playing the guitar, many people picked up on the technique and called it Travis Picking. His fabulous career helped him become part of the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1977. His two most famous songs are “Dark As A Dungeon” and “Sixteen Tons”.
He also appeared in a few movies and became friends with Johnny Cash, who was his hunting partner. In 1983, he died of a heart attack. We don’t know if his life insurance benefitted his heirs or not, but he has definitely left behind a legacy in country music which will always be remembered by country music lovers.
