After 137 Years, DNA May Have Finally Revealed Jack the Ripper
DNA Enters the Story

Modern forensic science brought new energy to the Ripper mystery when mitochondrial DNA was extracted from the shawl. That genetic material was then compared to living descendants of Catherine Eddowes and a suspect named Aaron Kosminski, a Polish immigrant living in Whitechapel in 1888.
The 2019 findings suggested a possible link between the two family lines. Supporters called it a breakthrough moment. Critics were quick to point out that mitochondrial DNA doesn’t identify one unique person and that the shawl’s history is uncertain. Still, it was the first time science had officially stepped into a legend.
