Lila wasn’t surprised to see the girl with the braid standing by the iron gate at the edge of the garden. Her hoodie was gone, and she wore a long coat now, the color of ash. “I didn’t lie,” she said. You just didn’t remember yet.”
Lila nodded. She knew her now, not as a stranger but as something else—a version of herself, a guide, and a warning. Maybe this was a part of herself she would someday lose. “Will the door close behind me?” Lila asked. The girl only smiled. “Not if you leave the right part of yourself behind.” The gate creaked open.
