This Girl Followed a Puppy Into an Alley—Then Disappeared From Maps
The Girl with the Braid
The following weekend, Lila returned to the library, but the red book was gone. In its place, a girl stood by the shelf. She looked around, Lila’s age, maybe older, with a dark hoodie, blue backpack, and a long braid down her back. She turned and smiled like she already knew who Lila was.
“Looking for something?” the girl asked. Lila didn’t answer. Her hands went cold. The braid that the note had warned her about. But this girl didn’t look dangerous—she looked calm and curious. Then the girl leaned in, whispering, “It opens wider if you’re not afraid.” Lila blinked—and when she looked again, the girl was gone.
