This Girl Followed a Puppy Into an Alley—Then Disappeared From Maps

The Note Under Her Pillow

Lila hadn’t told anyone. Not about the alley. Not about the girl with the braid or the symbol scratched on her window. So when she found a note under her pillow the next morning, her breath caught in her chest. The paper was creased and damp, like it had been held too long in sweaty hands.

It read: “Three signs. Two doors. One choice.” Nothing else. There was no signature, but she recognized the handwriting again because it was hers. She hadn’t written it. But she would. Somehow, Lila knew she would. And that scared her more than anything else so far.
