This Girl Followed a Puppy Into an Alley—Then Disappeared From Maps

A Whisper in the Rain

Rain fell in slow sheets on Wednesday. Lila walked home with her hood up and eyes low. But halfway down her street, she heard it again. The whispering. It was the same as before; there were so many voices, all talking over each other. This time, they were clearer. Some called her name. Some didn’t use names at all.

One phrase echoed louder than the rest: “She’s the fourth key.” Lila looked around. The street was empty, and no one was nearby. But when she stepped onto her front porch, her feet froze. The mat was soaked, but underneath was a dry patch in the shape of a circle with three notches.
