The next day was a weekend, and Lila returned to the library. She wandered through the old map drawers, flipping past pages so faded they looked like ghosts, but found no alley. Just the usual streets. She was about to give up when a thin red book caught her eye. It neither had a title nor a barcode.
Lila opened the book and saw that every page was handwritten, scrawled in black ink with symbols, circles, and arrows. In the center of one page, the same symbol from the door was found: a circle with three notches. The next page simply read: “If you see paw prints, follow. But never alone.”
