This Girl Followed a Puppy Into an Alley—Then Disappeared From Maps

The Library Shifts

Lila slammed the book shut. The quiet around her felt wrong now. Not calm—hollow. The air smelled faintly of metal. She turned to put the book back, but the shelf behind her wasn’t the same. The maps were gone. In their place: shelves of yellowed paper and unmarked spines that hadn’t been there before.

She spun again. The librarian’s desk was empty. The large clock on the wall was frozen at 4:17 p.m. and not ticking. Her heart pounded louder than it should have. She stepped forward, trying to find the exit. Somehow, the room had changed—and she hadn’t seen it happen.
