The moment Lila reached the front windows, everything clicked back. The tiles, the maps, and the tick of the clock. A soft clatter behind her made her jump—a single book had fallen off a shelf. But not just any book, the red one. It was open again. The pages fluttered, and the words had shifted.

Where it once warned not to go alone, it now said: “Midnight shows what sunlight hides.” That night, Lila lay awake, staring at the ceiling. Around 11:30 p.m., she slipped out of bed, shoes in hand, and tiptoed to the front door. By 11:56 p.m., she was standing in front of the alley.
