Lila didn’t mean to push the door, but it swung open wider with just her breath. Inside, everything looked drained of color. She stepped one foot in, but the puppy stayed behind. It whined once, then backed away. But something inside stepped forward. Not toward her. Past her.
It didn’t have a face—just a shape like smoke wearing a coat. She stood frozen. It didn’t see her—or maybe it didn’t care. It glided to the ivy-covered wall and vanished into it. She blinked, and the space was empty again. But when she turned to go, the door slammed shut behind her and locked.
