That role in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe was written for Lily by Jane Wagner. The two were already in a relationship as they met long before that. Lily talked about that period on a few occasions. She said that back in the ‘70s, celebrity news didn’t talk about people’s gender orientation and personal relationships unless they themselves would insist on it. She met Jane when she collaborated with her for her comedy album back in 1971. They got married in 2013 in Los Angeles after forty-two years together. That same year, their documentary An Apology to Elephants came out. Lily currently stars on Grace and Frankie.
