Anyone who visited Disneyland between 1959 and 1967 had a rare opportunity to witness magic. This is because the theme park advertised and believed that actual mermaids were present and available for interaction and photos. However, it was later revealed that these were paid actors, and visitors had been deceived.
The mermaids’ performances took place on the Submarine Voyage ride, where they swam with artificial tails and followed choreographed routines. Former mermaid Susan Hoose disclosed that they earned about $45 per week. Despite the deception, the mermaids left a lasting impression on visitors, who still recall the experience with fondness.
